Upside App Review: Cash Back on Gas and Groceries
Gas is one of those expenses you cannot skip. The van needs fuel for school drop-off, practice, and the weekly grocery run, and it adds up fast.
Upside is an app that gives a little of that money back. In this Upside app review, we cover how it works step by step, how you cash out, what realistic savings look like, and who it makes the most sense for.
We are not affiliated with Upside and are not paid for this review.
What is the Upside app?
Upside (once known as GetUpside) is a free app that offers cash back at participating gas stations, grocery stores, convenience stores, and restaurants. Some areas also have car wash offers. Businesses pay Upside to bring in customers, and Upside shares part of that with you as cash back.
Offers are location-based. What you see depends on the stations and stores near you, and in some areas the list is long while in others it is short. Upside is only available in the United States.
How Upside works, step by step
- Download the app and sign up. Create a free account with your email or phone number.
- Link a card. Upside now requires a debit or credit card in your app wallet, since that is how it confirms most purchases. Adding a card is free, though your bank may show a small temporary hold that drops off within a few days.
- Browse the map. Open the app before you head out and look at offers near you. Gas offers usually show as cents back per gallon.
- Claim the offer. Tap to claim before you buy. This step matters. If you forget, you usually do not get the cash back.
- Buy as normal. Pay with your linked card, or keep your receipt.
- Confirm the purchase. Most purchases are matched through your linked card. For some offers, such as when you pay with Apple Pay or Google Pay, you upload a photo of the final receipt in the app instead.
Offers have caps. Each gas offer covers up to 50 gallons, and there are daily limits on how many offers you can claim. Once you claim an offer, you have 4 hours to buy at a gas station or restaurant and 24 hours at a grocery store.
How you get paid
Cash back lands in your Upside balance after the purchase is verified, which Upside says usually takes 3 to 4 days and sometimes up to 10. From there, you can cash out to a bank account or choose a gift card. Upside removed PayPal as a cash-out option in 2026. A $1 fee may apply to cash-outs under $10, so check the options before you withdraw.
Realistic savings and time
Gas offers are shown as cents back per gallon and vary by station and day, and bigger first-time or promo offers pop up now and then. If you fill a 15-gallon tank weekly and average a modest amount back per gallon, that could be a few dollars a month from gas alone. Grocery and restaurant offers can add more, depending on what is near you.
How much you save across a year depends on how much you drive and how many participating stores are near you. That is not income. It is a small discount on things you were already buying.
Time cost is about 30 seconds per trip once you are used to it: open the app, claim, pay. The real cost is remembering.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Free to use.
- Rewards purchases you already make, like gas.
- Cash back can go to a bank account, not just gift cards.
- Quick once it becomes a habit.
Cons
- Offers depend heavily on your location, so rural areas may see fewer choices.
- You must claim before you buy, which is easy to forget.
- The station with the best offer is not always the cheapest station. Compare the pump price first.
- Cash-out options may include fees or minimums.
- Location and purchase data are shared with the app. Review the privacy settings.
Who Upside suits
Upside works best for families who drive a lot, live near several participating stations, and already use a card for gas. It is also handy for commuting parents and anyone doing lots of errands.
It is less useful if you live somewhere with few participating stores, drive very little, or tend to go out of your way to chase offers. Driving across town for three cents a gallon does not pay off once you count time and fuel.
Our Money Masters course helps you look at your gas and grocery lines in your budget first, so you know whether small savings like this actually move the needle for your family.
Upside app review: our verdict
Upside is a simple, free way to shave a little off gas and groceries. It is not a side hustle, and it will not replace paid work. It is a small discount tool that pays off best when it fits the route you already drive. Download it, check the map before your next fill-up, and see whether the offers near you are worth the extra tap.
